FAQ

Why would a homeschooler run for Board of Education?

The MCPS budget is over $3 billion dollars, and that budget is care of the taxpayers in this county, even the homeschoolers, even the private school parents, even those without kids. We all have a financial stake in the stewardship of this district and what happens in the public schools emanates throughout our society.

In order to legally homeschool in Maryland, parents must do so under the supervision of the Montgomery County Public School System or work under an umbrella program registered with the State Department of Education. Even homeschoolers have to contend with the school system, either at the county or state level.

Homeschooling our children is a privilege in a district where the vast majority of students at our zoned school aren’t reading or doing math on grade level. Not every student in this county has the privilege that ours do; to have a parent willing and able to stay home and teach them. Students deserve a safe school where they will obtain a world-class education, and as a product of a single mother and the public school system, I want to ensure that my neighbors have the same chances at success as my children do.

If you’re suing MCPS, why are you running for the Board of Education?

Along with another journalist, Matthew Foldi, I am suing the Board of Education for violating the open meetings act. In mid-2023, the BOE closed their meetings to residents protesting their policies in order to shield itself from criticism. In barring constituents from public meetings, our Board of Education broke Maryland law.  Considering the concurrent lawsuit related to the prolonged coverup of the conduct of an MCPS high school principal, there is a clear pattern of secrecy, lies, and corruption within the Board.  We need a BOE who is honest and unafraid to face constituents, and won’t open the county up to legal liability because of its fear to face those who are the victims of their decisions.

I would, obviously, recuse myself from any conversation of this suit. The fact that it was made necessary is because of BOE wrongdoing. My lawyers are asking for minimal damages ($1,000) which I’d be happy to donate towards tutoring services for MCPS students.

What are your thoughts about gender inclusive books and lessons in the classrooms?

In August of 2023, I wrote for the Free Press about the protests outside of the Board of Education. They were largely comprised of Muslim and Ethiopian parents who protested mandatory readings in the classroom that went against their religious beliefs. These parents strongly believe, as I do, that it is the job of schools to teach kids how to read and do math, not raise children with a set of values that contradicts those in their own home.

There is also such an intense focus on gender and sexuality while test scores and attendance are at record lows, and crime is skyrocketing.  MCPS needs a sharp refocus on what matters, educating kids and setting them up for success!
